The iPad

The long-rumored Apple tablet has been released.
A 9.7 inches LED Multi-touch screen (1024x768 pixel with 132 ppi) with 1.5 pounds and 0.5 inch thin body, and 10 hours battery life.
It has a custom 1 GHz processor designed by Apple, Wi-Fi 802.11n connectivity, optional 3G modem, built-in speaker; and 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of flash storage.
The iPad uses the same OS as the iPhone but with higher resolution, it means that iPhone Apps are supported.
Many great accessories specifically designed for iPad will be available.

An article about the origins of the Mac OS X Cocoa framework and the history of the architecture of the modern attempts of Apple to design a modern and high quality operating system, and the dismissal of the Java-like technology that Apple acquired from NeXT when it bought back Jobs to the heart of Apple.

The Yellow Box might have been a great technology, and a great attempt from apple to gain higher mind-share in the heads of software developers, but maintaining a multi-platform development foundation (as Java) turned out to be harder than we all like to think, and even Microsoft didn't completely embrace the concept of the multi-operating system framework (even when they have all the pieces necessary to do just that) and left a smaller company trying to complete such a huge project using complete rewriting and reverse engineering !!

iPhone in Egypt ... FINALLY

According to an AppleInsider.com article, Vodafone has inked a deal with Apple to provide the iPhone mobile phone in 10 countries, one of them is Egypt (in addition to Australia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey).

This will proabaly coincide with the highly-awaited iPhone 2.0 hardware, which is rumored to have 3G connectivity and video capabilities (probably it will be unveiled the Apple WWDC conference in late June).

I think the combination of third-party-enabled iPhone Software (iPhone 2.0 and the iPhone SDK) with the 3G network support, with the already-sexy hardware design will be the main pillars for Apple to reach its 10 million units target at end of 2008.

Some old Findings

I always find some things that may seem silly to people, yet very useful to other people, I'll keep posting about such things until I find that really interesting thing that no-one can find silly, and keep it to myself.
Some of these silly things:

• If anybody tries to convince you that the GIS is another platform you can learn and lightly use it then later forget about it, be warned, it is a really dangerous plot to turn normal people into geography-loving map-making freaks that speak all of the time about the lack and inaccuracy of the publicly available geo-data and about how accurate the data you personally collect and process compared to your government's data.
• I'm a big loser to stay in the Microsoft developers camp for so long (VB 2/3/4/5/6, VB.NET, then C#), I've heard about Java in as early as 96/97, but never tried it before 2 months ago, and it is a great language to learn and a great community to join
• Apple got some of the greatest designers in the tech industry, I just wish I have enough money to be a full-time mac user (or that they become more affordable in foreign countries).
• Adobe is the graphics designer best friend, Thank God Microsoft is failing in its pathetic attempts to take over the graphics market.
• People using AutoCAD should be using AutoCAD 'til the end of their lives, its the best punishment for learning such a bad program from the beginning, it is one of the worst large applications ever (every industry has better solutions for its users, especially in the Architecture, Landscape and GIS industries), I have to switch over to anything else.
